Charges have been filed against Levar Jones, the father of a 7-year-old boy who police say accidentally shot his younger brother who 7 month sold.
Jones, 26, of Englewood, Illinois, was charged with felony counts of having an invalid firearm owners identification card and reckless conduct, along with a misdemeanor charge of endangering the health and life of a child. Police said Jones was not eligible to hold a Firearm Owner’s ID (FOID) card, but they did not explain why.
The 7-year-old boy (Jones’ son) found the gun, which was loaded, under a bed in his home. He then accidentally shot his younger brother, who was sleeping in his bed, through the top of his left leg. The gun belonged to Jones, according to police.
At about 8:10 p.m., police and paramedics were called to the home. They took the 7-month-old to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was initially described as being in serious-to-critical condition. Authorities said later that his condition had stabilized and his life no longer appeared to be in danger. The 7-month-old boy was apparently found by his mother, who heard the gunshot.
