A bulletin on the universities website reads; “Person with gun reported near Dietrick. Stay inside. Secure doors. Emergency personnel reponding. Call 911 for help.”

Dietrick is believed to the university’s campus canteen. The campus siren has been activated to warn students – although Autumn classes have not started yet, Summer classes are currently being held.

It is being reported that just after 9am local time three students spotted a 6 foot male holding a pistol loosely concealed by a cloth. Police officers immediately responded, but have not yet found anyone matching the description. No other witnesses have come forward.

In 2007, America’s worst school shooting happened at Virginia Tech – Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old student, went on a rampage at the university, killing 32 students before shooting himself. Virginia Tech were fined $55,000 for failing to notify students of a gunman, according to Sky News.
