Docs may halt vaccines over monetary concerns
Posted December 2nd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.newsroomamerica.comA new survey shows that 1 in 10 doctors stated that they may stop giving vaccinations to privately insured children because it costs too much. Maybe government subsidized vaccinations might be the first baby step to universal health care — and something that many could get behind before supporting “socialized medicine”.
A second survey also revealed stark differences between what doctors pay for vaccines and what insurers reimburse. On one vaccine, for instance, one in 10 physicians lost money on a recommended infant vaccine, but other doctors made nearly $40 per dose.
The surveys were revealing to many doctors.
“Many physicians really weren’t aware and that they were getting reimbursed so little,” Dr. Gary Freed of the University of Michigan, a co-author of both articles published in the December issue of the journal Pediatrics, told The Associated Press.
