A 6-year-old Richland Hills, Texas, boy spent 18 hours in the hospital after his father carved a pentagram into the boys’ back.
The boy’s father, Brent Troy Bartel, admitted he assaulted the boy when he called 911 to report that his son was injured and bleeding.
In an audio obtained by KSDK, Bartel can be heard telling the dispatcher, “I shed some innocent blood.”
The dispatch operator then asked the man to clarify.
Bartel responded, “I inscribed a pentagram on my son.”
“On your son?” the dispatcher asked.
“Yes Ma’am,” Bartel replied.
The 911 operator then went on to ask, “Why did you do that?”
Bartel said, “Because it’s a holy day.”
The boy’s mother reportedly ran to a neighbor’s house after the incident, begging for help. A Richland Hills police report stated that while the boy’s cuts were not deep enough to require stitches, he was left without a shirt shivering and covered in a substantial amount of blood.
KSDK reported that the five pointed star, otherwise known as a pentagram, was the size of a basketball, covering the boy’s back. He reportedly used a box cutter to carve the star into the boy’s skin.
Bartel has been arrested and charged with assault. Police say that they don’t believe he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he allegedly assaulted the boy.
