A Portland, Oregon, 11-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy have been accused of robbing a woman and trying to steal her car on Saturday using a .22 caliber handgun.
The robbery caught Amy Garrett, 22, off gaurd. Garrett says she was sitting in her truck in the parking lot of the Freedom Foursquare Church in Portland, waiting for her parents, when two youngsters approached her and demanded she hand over her truck. Garrett said the 7-year-old asked the 11-year-old to “show her your piece.”
Garrett claims the boys threatened to shoot her if she didn’t comply. The boys also reportedly asked Garrett for cash and her cell phone.
Garrett explained to KPTV News:
They pulled out the bullets and that’s when I realized it was actually real. He said it was cocked and fully loaded and ready to go and he was telling me he was going to blow my brains out.
Garrett was able to flee the scene by driving away and calling police. Garrett admits she was terrified, wondering if the child was going to shoot her through the truck window.
When police caught up with the boys, they found the 11-year-old reaching for a loaded handgun. Police acted quickly and were able to restrain the boy before he pulled out the gun.
Since Oregon law prevents police from arresting children as young as the suspects, police were forced to hand them back into the custody of their families.
Garrett said that she was disappointed that police weren’t able to apprehend the children because she believes in spite of their age, the boys are extremely dangerous.
Detectives are currently investigating how the 11-year-old obtained the gun.
