A 7-year-old boy in Detroit was found dead after hanging himself with a belt from his bunk bed. He was found by his 14-year-old sister. The girl got her mother, who then removed the door knob from the bedroom door to get in, and held her son in the air while a neighbor removed the belt
“It’s just a tragedy on so many levels,” Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. said Thursday, calling the situation “unfathomable.”
In a police report, the parents said the boy had been bullied at his elementary school because, “he was the only boy in the home of eight females.” They were also concerned about his depression stemming from the parent’s recent separation. Their son expressed a desire to harm himself and was being counseled by their pastor.
An autopsy is being performed, though police expect this to be ruled a suicide. Meanwhile, the neighborhood is in shock. As neighbor Harold Pleasant told The Detroit Free Press, ”I’m going to be devastated about this if God don’t take it away from me because I can’t think of nothing else. I don’t know how a kid that age can come to the conclusion to kill himself.”
