Chicago to replace hi-tech with old fashioned

May 8th, 2012 by | Permalink

With the NATO summit coming to Chicago it is expected that there will be a lot of changes. One such change is the public use garbage cans.

Chicago currently has large trash cans known as “big belly” cans which are large solid waste disposal units. The units being replaced are state-of-the-art solar-powered garbage and recycling bins that were installed in areas around Chicago as a way to save costs on pick up and as a way to generate ad revenue. These “smart cans” send email to the city to let them know when they are full and need emptying.

According to police the cans are opaque and lidded which makes it impossible to see what is inside. Chicago police have instructed city crews to replace the Big Belly cans “within the expected footprint of the NATO event” with the open-wire basket garbage cans. The wire cans allow police to easily look for dangerous goods during the expected NATO protests.

Police state that the solar-powered cans will be replaced when it is safe to do so.
