Josh Powell, the husband of Susan Powell, who has been missing since December 2009 has apparently taken the lives of his two children, Braden and Charlie, and himself in what police are calling a murder/suicide. Joshua Powell has been under intense suspicion by both the police and Susan’s family ever since Susan went missing on a cold, snowy day in Utah, shortly before Christmas 2009. Josh claimed he and his sons were camping the evening of her disappearance but his statement has been inconsistent and doesn’t make sense due to the weather and Josh’s lack of camping inexperience.
Susan’s family, who reject Josh’s alibi, have gone on record stating that Josh and the boys had never been camping — why set out for the first time during a blizzard. They’ve been increasingly vocal over the years about their suspicions. After Susan’s disappearance, Susan’s family claimed that Josh tried to isolate the children, who were now 7 and 5. A custody battle ensued after Josh took the kids to Washington state to live with him and his father. Josh’s father, Steven Powell was arrested for child porn last year, furthering the resolve of the Cox family. Steven Powell also raised eyebrows after he claimed that he and Susan had a torrid affair, another accusation the family denies.
While the courts gave temporary custody of the boys to Susan’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, Josh had just regained visitation rights, as ordered by the court. Yesterday was one of several scheduled visitations which had already happened without incidence according to the Graham, Washington PD. A Pierce County Washington social worker dropped the boys off and said that she was pushed out of the home immediately after the boys stepped inside Josh’s home. She said she smelled gas and ran to call 911 when a huge explosion occurred.
Police believed the explosion was planned in order to carry out a murder/suicide. According to the Cox’s family attorney however, the boys had recently started to speak about the events surrounding their mom’s disappearance, saying that their mom was ‘in the mine’. Other reports say that the older boy, Charlie, began to talk about it more and more, also claiming that his mom was put in the trunk. It is unknown whether or not the boy’s recollection lead Josh to murder his sons and kill himself.
According to ABC News, the family of Susan Cox Powell is angry that the courts did nothing to protect the boys from the father they believed murdered their daughter.
