Florida woman accused of seeking cash for 5-year-old
A Florida woman has been arrested and charged after police say she attempted to sell her 5-year-old son to feed her pill popping habit.
Officials in Pinellas County, Florida, say that Jessica Marie Beers had approached a couple she had met at the church she attended, and tried to turn over parental rights in exchange for cash.
James Gardner told police that he and his wife had been helping Beers financially and donating food to her and her son for a while after feeling sorry for her situation, and last weekend came to them with the unusual offer, according to ABC Action News.
Gardner said Beers had been asking them to watch her son more often as of late, and they knew Beers had an addiction to prescription drugs.
After Beers allegedly suggested that the Gardners take custody of the boy in exchange for $2,000, Gardner went to the cops.
Beers reportedly confessed to police that she had tried to sell her son, and was charged with the Sale of Parental Rights and for violating her probation.
The boy is currently in custody with child protective services.
