An 11-year-old Chicago boy, Deontae Haynes drowned in the Nodaway River in far southeast Iowa last night according to a press release by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. A 16-year-old girl, Tamra Haley of Clarinda, Iowa attempted to save the boy. She was hospitalized at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha.
The Iowa DNR reports that the drowning occurred about 9 p.m. Tuesday night, at which time there were five people were swimming in the river near a dam. According to witnesses, the boy wading when he was pulled into the undertow of the dam. The girl swallowed water while trying to rescue him and started to struggle, but others were able to pull her out of the water.
According to officials, Haynes was found by divers in about 27-feet of water. He was taken to the hospital in Clarinda where he was pronounced dead.
