Kindergartner with mohawk suspended

Oh, for crying out loud, with all the problems occurring in our nation’s public school system, should administrators really be making a priority how a mom cuts her kid’s hair? Really, who gives a shit?

A kindergarten student with a freshly spiked Mohawk has been suspended from school.

Michelle Barile, the mother of 6-year-old Bryan Ruda, said nothing in the Parma Community School handbook prohibits the haircut, characterized by closely shaved sides with a strip of prominent hair on top. The school said the hair was a distraction for other students.

“I understand they have a dress code. I understand he has a uniform. But this is total discrimination,” she said. “They can’t tell me how I can cut his hair.”

An administrator at the suburban Cleveland charter school first warned Barile last fall that the haircut wasn’t acceptable. The school later sent another warning to her reiterating the ban.

Mohawks violate the school’s policy on being properly groomed, school Principal Linda Geyer said. Also, the school district’s dress code allows school officials to forbid anything that interferes with the conduct of education.

Do any of you feel that a child with a mohawk in your kid’s class would be a “distraction” to their education?

First let me say that the child is the one who is loosing out here…he is being suspended because his mother is immature. The full story is that last fall the mother was told that the haircut was unacceptable. She then received a letter reiterating the rules about the haircut, again saying that it was unacceptable. This is the THIRD time she sent her son to school with this haircut.

Yes, the rule may be stupid. Yes, there are probably bigger things to worry about. BUT, this mother knew the rules and she took it upon herself to ignore them. She had even been warned…more than once. She choose to ignore the rules and do whatever she wanted to do, thus putting her son’s education in jeopardy. So is she teaching her son to ignore the rules you think are stupid? Perhaps he will think it is stupid to have to be home by midnight?

Here’s a lesson to teach her son:
The FIRST time she was told that the haircut was unacceptable she says ok and asks the administration how to address the issue so that she can get the rules changed. She explains to her son (if you are inclined to explain every thing to your 6 year old) that the rules say he cannot have that haircut but we are going to try to change the rules. Until the rules are changed though, he will have to wear an acceptable haircut (whatever that is). This way the boy is in school learning and he also learns a little life lesson.

My son started pre-school this year with a mohawk. They told him it could not be spiked up. I think it is totally ridiculous. What are we doing, going back to the 50’s when boys weren’t allowed to wear long hair, and girls had to wear skirts????

So Kipp, are you saying Rosa Parks was immature for breaking the rules? Do you think the rules would have been changed for Rosa Parks if she just said, “oh please change them.” It’s called non-violent disobedience. And yes, not allowing certain hair styles in schools is ridiculous! The boy should be praised for having the guts and such high self-esteem to wear something that goes against the mainstream “perceived” norm.

What about an afro? Is that a distraction? I think it is ridiculous - just like Kim said - “what are we going back to the 50’s. Is it policy that everone in that school has the same exact haircut. I think just because some people in the school did not like it - they are punishing an innocent boy. Not fair. It is the school who is putting the boys education at risk not the mother. Doesn’t the school have better things to worry about.

    Get Real,
You are not seriously equating this woman to Rosa Parks?
Try this then…the woman had her son enrolled in a magnet school. To go to a magnet school you must conform to their rules or go to a public school. After the first warning she knew the rules…go to the public school then. If I enroll my kid in Catholic school I should expect that he will be required to go to mass. If I don’t want to make him go to mass then I don’t put him in Catholic school.

She enrolled her child in a special school and then did not want to follow the rules. There are plenty of parents who will follow the rules in order to get a better education. Now one of their kids can have the spot.

I read the school’s handbook out of curiosity.

2.3080 RESPECT The school teaches diversity, tolerance and understanding for those with different lifestyles, beliefs,
    and opinions.

They also insure fair and equal treatment to pregnant students.

But they suspend a kindergartner for his haircut.
what about braids, dreadlockes, high&tight, bleached blonds,
    highlights, parted in the middle.

What a crappy schoolboard decision. I hope they think longer and harder next time.

    PS KIPP
Catholic Schools don’t requirer you to say MASS. They believe in the individual right of choice.

This seems like a silly thing for both sides to get so worked up about. It’s just a haircut. But I also think that you should not lightly teach your children to disregard authority, especially in their school.
