Game of Thrones: Extending extended breastfeeding and beyond

There’s extended breastfeeding and then there’s e-x-t-e-n-d-e-d breastfeeding. Last night on episode 5 of the HBO show Game of Thrones, which is a period show based in the middle ages, one character, Lysa Arryn, has a scene where she’s breastfeeding her son which has sent the Internets all a flutter. If you don’t watch the show, it’s a Dungeons and Dragon-esque, medieval smack down amongst wealthy families who try to kill each other in order to obtain as much power as possible. It’s a great show if you like gay sex, beheaded animals, swords in the eye and dwarfs.

Anyway, as the King’s Hand’s wife greeted her sister along with her dwarf captive, she found her sister Lysa sitting on her throne, breastfeeding her bratty and precocious son who is apparently around 6 or 7 years old.

If they were going for the “gasp” effect, they certainly got it . On top of all this, the character, Lysa, is portrayed as being completely nutters.

One blogger from Warming Glow said this about the scene, “And that list doesn’t even include the ‘WHOA!’ moments of a six-year-old boy breastfeeding from his crazy mother…”

A commenter on another blog said, “THE KID WAS ABOUT [sic] YEARS OLD. Did we have to SEE that? Maybe a verbal mention of it, then a scene with the kid in her lap and he wipes his mouth. The idea is plenty ‘rated R’ and graphic. The actual scene is disturbing. I question the director/producers/actors standards. YUCK!!!” which someone replied:

“That’s the entire point of the scene, you’re supposed to see that Lysa is utterly deranged and there’s no better way to do that than showing her breastfeeding an 6-7 year old.”

The Houston Chronicle’s blog offers this up for the episode 5 recap:

“Cut to Lysa, Cat’s sister, acting craaaazy. Tyrion undersold the crazy. How crazy? Well, she’s breastfeeding her kid, who is a few years past baby teeth. He too is touched.”

So, everyone’s grossed out by the kid who in the next breath asks his nursing mother if he can see the dwarf fly. He’s an evil little breastfeeding fucker.

What do you think? Is the scene “tits” or is it just gross?
