A Chicago man who was changing his 6-month-old daughter’s diaper is in critical condition on Tuesday and his infant daughter dead after the pair were shot multiple times through the family’s van on Monday.
Jonathan Watkins was changing the diaper of Jonylah Watkins when gunman approached them from behind and started shooting.
Mr. Watkins was standing outside the passenger door of the family van while Jonylah was lying on the passenger seat in preparation for a diaper change. The infant suffered five gunshot wounds to her lungs, liver, intestines, leg and shoulder. Mr. Watkins was shot in the buttock, side and face.
Jonylah was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago but succumbed to her injuries early Tuesday morning. Mr. Watkins in still in critical condition.
According to CBS Chicago, sources revealed that Mr. Watkins has a record of gang involvement.
Jonylah’s grandmother, Maryann Young, called the gunman “cowardly” while the area pastor, Rev. Corey Brooks echoed her sentiment, saying, “Anyone that would shoot, knowing that there’s a baby there, is a cowardly person.”
Brooks vowed to catch the perpetrator and is offering a $6,000 reward to any information leading to the suspect through his New Beginnings Church in Woodlawn.
