A 9-year-old girl gave birth to a healthy baby girl and is now one of the youngest mothers in the world. The girl, identified as “Dafne,” gave birth by C-section at the Zoquipan hospital in Jalisco, Mexico on January 27. The baby weighed 5.7 lbs.
According to the hospital director, Dr. Enrique Rabago, “Due to her young age and to the fact that her body was not ready to give birth, the medical team decided a C-section was the best option for both mother and child.”
Dafne was only 8-years-old when she became pregnant. She is saying the father of the child is her 17-year-old boyfriend. The boyfriend is currently missing and has not been located.
“The father is a boy who is 17, but we have not found him, since he ran away,” said Dafne’s mother.
Lino Ginzalez Corona, spokesperson for the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, said in a press release, “Due to her young age, we don’t know if she is being entirely truthful. Authorities are still open to the possibility of rape or child sex abuse.”
Jorge Villasenor, also with the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office stated, “We are looking for the young man to get his story because she does not understand what has happened.”
Dafne is one of 11 children. Both of her parents work and are unable to watch their children while they work.
The young mother and her baby were discharged, but the hospital will continue to closely monitor the baby’s development due to the young age of the mother.
