A Guernsey County, Ohio, father was found on Wednesday inside his home with his 5-year-old son, Jacob, both shot and killed in what Guernsey County Sheriff Michael McCauley believes to be a murder-suicide.
The boy’s mother, Jessica Ball, became concerned when she went to pick up her son from the school’s after school Headstart program and the daycare workers said the boy never showed up. Jessica Ball and her husband had just separated a day after Christmas. Ball rushed to her husband’s house upon learning that her son was missing, meeting deputies there after the daycare called the police.
At the father’s home, deputies found Jacob dead from a gun shot wound. Jacob’s father, Russell Ball, was also found dead inside his home from self inflicted gun-shot wound.
School officials told NBC News that Russell had recently inquired at the school about a bus driving job. They said that Russell was an involved father who participated in Headstart and classroom activities with his son.
Jessica said that her husband had threatened suicide in past, but she never took him seriously because he never acted on the threat. Russell Ball is believed to have suffered from depression, having lost his job and marriage.
Sheriff McCauley said that the couple had been arguing the night before.
