82-year-old Kathryn Virginia Hamlin was eating at Mama Mia’s Pizzeria in Anna, Texas with her daughter and grandson when a car came crashing through the restaurant’s wall. NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reports that the driver of the car, an 80-year-old woman, had just left a nearby beauty salon when she accidentally pressed on the gas instead of the brake. The car then struck a pole and a minivan before crashing into the restaurant.
Hamlin’s family soon found themselves pinned by the car. At least four people were rushed to the hospital due to the accident. Hamlin succumbed to her injuries and passed away at the hospital. Her grandson and daughter were released from the hospital late last night.
Hamlin had recently lost her husband of 64 years, burying him last week. NBC reports that she was a frequent customer at Mama Mia’s and was there on Friday to share Frank’s obituary with the staff.
Rhett William’s, Hamlin’s grandson, told CBS 11 Dallas-Fort Worth that the loss of his grandmother has not quite sunk in. However, he says that he does not hold any anger in the situation. He explained, “I have no anger, ’cause I mean, it was an accident.”
As of last night, investigators had not informed the driver of the death. At the time, they were not sure that she could handle the news. Charges are not expected.
