Nine passengers were thrown from a GMC Envoy sports utility vehicle on Monday when the car spun out of control and overturned outside of Canton, Texas. The vehicle was carrying 10 children between the ages of 2 and 13, plus the adult driver and passenger. The accident happened about an 90 minutes outside of Dallas in the early afternoon.
Among the fatalities were five children. Among the dead were four girls ages 2-years-old, 3-years-old, 6-years-old and a 13-year-old. One 3-year-old boy also lost his life after first responders tried to stabilize him and get him to a hospital.
Highway police said that the children were not properly restrained and the vehicle was was carrying too many people to be safe.
According to NBC Dallas, Trooper Jean Dark, who was one of the investigators at the crash site said that all the occupants were wearing swim suits which led them to believe they were on their way to a water park.
It is not yet known what caused the vehicle to roll because the trooper acknowledged that there was a language barrier preventing them from getting all the facts at the scene. Translators will be enlisted to help police discover the facts of what happened.
