The Colorado Department of Transportation posted a photo on its Facebook wall showing the backseat of a car where a mother had taken her child out of its car seat and instead strapped in a gas can.
The woman was pulled over when she and her other child — a 14-year-old — were spotted by an Aurora police officer not wearing seat belts. When he went to the car to speak to her, he saw the toddler in the backseat also unbelted. The gas can, however, was secure.
The woman, who has not been identified, reportedly told the officer that the child unbuckled himself. She was cited for three seatbelt violations and not having proof of insurance.
The Colorado DOT is using the incident to remind people to keep their children in car seats.
