The Taliban may have abducted around 30 young people on an outing in Pakistan’s tribal region, according to authorities there.
Islam Zeb, a senior administrator in Bajaur Agency, said the youths, who were between the ages of 10 and 20, were walking to a picnic spot along a river to mark the end of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.
Relatives were contacted by members of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan who said they were holding the youth, according to Zeb. Zeb also said elders were meeting to discuss the recovery of the children.
Bajaur Agency is one of seven districts in Pakistan’s tribal region and lies on the border with Afghanistan. This alleged abduction comes soon after an attack by militants from Afghanistan, which killed 25 Pakistani security personnel in Chitral (a mountainous region in northern Pakistan).
