Change.org has started an internet campaign to pressure the producers of the long-running and popular children’s show “Sesame Street” into having Bert and Ernie (two male friends who live together) get married.
As of early Wednesday, more than 900 people had signed an online petition about the puppet friends. There is an accompanying Facebook page with more than 350 supporters. The petition includes the explanation: “We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful…It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different.” The petition also asks that the show add a transgender character.
The sexual orientation of the popular Bert and Ernie characters has been debated for years, mainly because they sleep in the same room (in seperate beds) and bicker constantly.
The non-profit Sesame Workshop released te following statement to reaffirm that the characters are simply best friends: “They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.”
