Wu Juping was given a shock on Saturday evening when she spotted two-year-old Zhang Fangyu, known as Niu Niu, dangling from the window of her tenth storey apartment.
Eyewitnesses described Wu as immediately kicking off her shoes and running to catch the toddler as she fell. The impact of the child’s fall knocked Wu to the ground and broke her left arm, while toddler Niu Niu was rushed to the Children’s Hospital of Zhejiang Hospital, where scans to the brain showed no damage, but swelling to the abdomen has suggested possible organ damage and internal bleeding. She was said to be in critical condition.
Niu Niu was reportedly being looked after by her grandmother when her grandmother left their apartment to run an errand.
Wu later spoke to the media, saying; “It was so urgent. When I saw her she was about to fall and rushed there, and after tens of seconds she fell off. I thought to myself, ‘I should stretch my arms to her. Because I am right here. I must get her.’ Then I made it. I caught her in my arms.”
The Telegraph also reported that Wu said seeing the girl dangling reminded her of her own seven-month-old, who once fell from his high chair and cut his mouth.
As yet, there has been no information released on whether Niu Niu’s family will face charges, or if her condition has improved.
