Chihuahua’s and Chinese Crested dog’s win the title most often, with Yoda taking over from a Chihuahua named Princess Abby who won in 2010. In 2009 a boxer mix called Pabst won, ending a Chinese Crested’s 7-year-run.

The competition comes with a prize of $1,000, and a large amount of publicity for both the dog and it’s owner.

The most famous winner of the competition was a 7lb Chinese Crested called Rascal. The BBC report that he was owned by actor Dane Andrew of Sunnyvale, and originally won the title in 2002. He then went on to win four other ‘Ugliest’ honors, including Oldest Ugliest dog.

Rascal made use of his fame, appearing on The View, ET’s Insider, Last Call with Carson Daly and in People magazine. He also appeared in four horror movies. He has since bought out his own line of leashes, and has a cartoon strip. It is reported that he may also be involved in an upcoming documentary. All of the money he raises is donated to animal charities.
