2 Suspects in custody following the shooting of 2 girls, 2 and 7.

Two suspects described by the police as known gang members were taken into custody this morning in connection with the shooting of two young girls. The girls, age 2 and 7, were caught in crossfire at about 7:45 PM on Wednesday in a lot on the northwest side of Chicago near Avondale Park, police said.

A bullet grazed the head of the 2-year-old, wounding her and the 7-year-old was shot in the upper back.  As of Thursday evening,  the 7-year-old’s condition had become stable and the 2-year-old had been upgraded to good condition, police said.

Albany Park District Cmdr. Melissa Staples reported that the shooter got out of a van in an alley on Drake Avenue and fired toward a group of people playing basketball after someone apparently flashed gang signs.

There was a CAPS police meeting taking place at the park when shots rang out, and several community members ducked for cover. As people scrambled to safety, Jo Ann Trainer said she saw a man holding a little girl who had been shot in the back. Trainer expressed her disgust.  “It’s not the first time there’s been shooting at this park, and unfortunately it takes something like this — a child has to be hurt — before they get more police here.” She said that she and her neighbors have been trying for a long time to get increased security in the area, but to no avail.
