Working Mother magazine recently released their top 100 companies for mothers to work for. Not much fanfare to report, but speaking from experience — don’t fall for it! I have worked for 2 of the companies on the list and they were the absolute WORST companies for mothers to work for. I thought the first one was just a fluke, but honestly, it takes skill for a company (cough, cough, Scholastic) to be as horrible to working parents and some of the “winners”. When I worked for one of the companies on the list, I had a situation where I had to pick up a sick child from school, I notified my boss who told me to come back that evening and put in the hours I lost or be docked pay. Six months later, I had to call in sick for a child and they threatened to hold back my bonus.

I believe it comes down to how good of a public relations team you have. The more bank you put behind public relations, the more deception and dishonesty you can hide.

So, let this be a warning. If a headhunter calls, or you happen to see a “help wanted” on career builder from one these top 100 — RUN!!!! I have had much better luck working for companies that are not on the list. Trust me.
