Parents of drowned toddler given community service

Posted May 28th, 2008 by minortopics | via blog.mlive.com

The parents of a Michigan toddler that drowned have been sentenced to 400 hours of community service after a judge ruled their neglect was responsible for the drowning. Seems like a rather light sentence…

Misty Harvey, 29, and Jamie Harvey, 33, will serve that sentence and spend three years on probation under an order fashioned by county and state authorities as punishment for Grandon Harvey’s death.

The couple pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after they found their boy inside their home on Sept. 25. A charge of marijuana possession was dropped as part of the plea deal. They could have faced up to 15 years in prison.

Toddler who fell in Lake Michigan improving

A toddler who fell in Lake Michigan last month has been taken off his respirator and appears to be improving.

Lazar Ognjenovic, 2, was admitted to Children’s Memorial Hospital on April 18, but he has now been transferred to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

The incident unfolded during a lakefront stroll with his grandfather when a strong wind blew the stroller into the water, officials said. A witness said the grandfather, who could barely swim, jumped in after the boy.

In a statement, the Ognjenovics requested that the public continue to honor their request for privacy “as Lazar enters the next steps toward rehabilitation.”

Toddler swept away by Chicago wind

Posted April 19th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.suntimes.com

They don’t call it the Windy City for nothin’, a Serbian Grandfather found out — the hard way.

A two year old boy was swept into chilly Lake Michigan during a storm surge. It was 15 minutes before he was found. The baby is now in critical condition. Not sure if a baby can survive full submersion for that long.

As he clung to the pier at Belmont Harbor, moaning and crying, all the man could do was point down into the dark water.

“Boy!” he said. “Boy! Boy!”
The boy, the man’s 2-year-old grandson, was 10 feet below the water’s surface at the bottom of the harbor, still strapped into his stroller, which had apparently been swept off the breakwater by a strong gust of wind.

“The lower half of his body was in the water,” said witness John Derscheid, who called 911. “I ran over there and he was looking around in the water. He had his head dunked in the water. . . . I said ‘there’s a ladder down here.’ “

Toddler drowns in Lake during family get-together

Posted April 13th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.peninsuladailynews.com

Not to add to the parents grief and suffering — I can’t even imagine what it’s like to lose a child, but there is a lesson to learned from this tragic ending. A toddler drowned during a family gathering. Although an accident, the sheriff states that there is nothing anybody could have done. He claims it all happened within a couple of minutes.

But, when a baby or toddler is near water, you can’t even allow yourself to turn your back for even 30 seconds. That is the lesson to be taught to all parents of young children. Small children and distractions do not mix. You can never be too safe. If a family does bring little ones around water, please have them in a life vest or some sort of floating device.

BEAVER — A 22-month-old boy drowned Friday during a family gathering at a home near Lake Pleasant.

Steven Neel, the son of Jennifer Daman and James Neel of Forks, vanished only minutes after several family members had seen him, and was found in Lake Creek about 50 minutes later.

“It was literally within just a couple of minutes — they realized he was missing, and launched a search,” Clallam County Undersheriff Ron Peregrine said on Saturday.

“I can’t see a single thing that anyone could have done differently.”

An 16 month old baby who had drowned in a backyard pool and declared brain dead and without a pulse, suddenly shocked doctors and family when he came back to life. This all happened while family was deliberating on whether or not to donate his organs. Medical experts believed him to be dead and today, he suffers no side effects from being dead.

The baby was cold, blue and foaming at the mouth and nose, Ross said.

Doctors estimate Michael drowned 30 minutes before he arrived at the hospital. Michael arrived at the hospital in complete cardiopulmonary arrest, authorities said.

At the hospital, Avila was hysterical at the sight of her baby on life support. She was told the first 72 hours were critical and there was no guarantee Michael would make it.

His pulse finally returned after one hour and 10 minutes of using an oxygen bag to inflate his lungs and chest compressions to circulate his blood.
