A beef product dubbed “pink slime” by its detractors has become notorious this week, courtesy of the internet. Bettina Elias Siegel, who started an anti-“pink slime” petition Tuesday on her blog The Lunch Tray, announced today that she garnered 25,000 signatures of supporters demanding the government ban the beef from school lunches. Possible E. coli contamination caused the U.S. Department of Agriculture to issue a Class I recall for 40,000 pounds of ground beef products intended for Georgia school lunches.
