Ex-boyfriend attacks teen girl’s father

Posted July 11th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.startribune.com

Perhaps this 15-year-old girl’s parents will think twice before letting her date a 19-year-old in the first place.

Police were on the hunt for a 15-year-old girl dragged kicking and screaming from her northeast Minneapolis back yard Thursday by a former boyfriend who had just cold-cocked her father, leaving him hospitalized.

Police were looking for Tony Montez McGee, 19, the subject of a restraining order taken out on behalf of the girl, Alison Leigh Traefald.

“I am afraid of Tony. He threatens to kill me, my family or that he will burn down my house if he doesn’t get his way,” Traefald wrote in a court document requesting a restraining order. The order was issued against McGee.

Mother fatal victim of car chase

Posted April 7th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.twincities.com

A 15-year-old in Minneapolis driving a stolen car was being chased by police when the teen rammed the car into a mother driving herself and her 6-year-old son to Sunday school. The woman was killed, and her son is in critical condition. In a gross injustice, the teenager only received minor injuries.

The boy, who ran from the crash scene at Lake Street and Stevens Avenue and was arrested inside a Kmart store, likely will face several felony charges, including criminal vehicular homicide, Minneapolis police Sgt. William Palmer said.

Police pursued the suspect’s car for about a mile and a half before the chase was called off near Lake Street and Chicago Avenue because of concern for the public’s safety, Palmer said. The crash happened about a half-mile down the street.

“This was a very quick incident,” he said.

The Hennepin County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as 26-year-old Hanna Abukar, of Minneapolis.

Omar Jamal, of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center, spent Sunday consoling Abukar’s husband and friends. He said Abukar had been driving her 6-year-old son and a 13-year-old neighborhood boy to Sunday school when the incident occurred.

“She was a good wife, mother and member of the community,” Jamal said. “It’s a tragic loss.”

Minnesota girl dies from flu

Posted February 29th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.kare11.com

We’re already extremely paranoid about the flu, a seemingly innocuous virus that most think will just mean a couple days home from work or school, but that actually kills about 20,000 people a year especially the elderly and young children. The first tragic case at the beginning of this year’s flu season comes from Minnesota, where a Twin Cities 12-year-old has died from influenza.

Police responded to a call around 2:30 in the morning last Monday at the 4200 block of South Fifth Avenue.

When they arrived the 12 year-old girl was already dead.

Neighbors say the girl had been sick for a couple of days.

This as doctors say the flu season has just started in Minnesota.

Counties are also working on a mobilization effort to get more flu shots out to kids.

Doctors at West Health in Plymouth say spring may be around the corner, but the flu season is far from over.

Woman formally charged in death of Demond Reed

Posted February 12th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.myfoxtwincities.com

Carla Poole of Minneapolis, Minnesota has now been formally charged with the murder of Demond Reed. Demond, who was only 4 years old, was in Poole’s custody (she’s a family member) because his father had been incarcerated a month earlier. Poole allegedly beat Demond because he soiled his pants. Our heart is absolutely breaking right now for Demond, who obviously went through a lot of grief in his brief time in this world.

Poole is being held in Hennepin County Jail on $1 million bail.

According to a police documents, some of Poole’s children witnessed the beating of Demond Reed. An affidavit says one child told police Demond had a seizure and began to vomit, but Poole refused to call for help because she was afraid.

On Sunday, police found the 4-year-old’s body in a trash bag on the 3100 block of Morgan Ave. N. Demond Reed disappeared last Wednesday from a Minneapolis home while staying in the company of a family acquaintance.

Body of missing Chicago boy found in Minneapolis

Posted February 11th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.wthitv.com

Demond Reed, a 4-year-old Chicago boy living with his cousin in Minneapolis, was reported missing last Wednesday. Upon further investigation, Minneapolis police actually found Desmond’s body inside the house where he was staying:

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office is trying to determine how and when Demond died, but police say they’re investigating it as a homicide.

His grandmother, Charmon Brown of the Chicago area, told KSTP-TV she had trusted the cousin to take care of Demond, but that the cousin had hurt the boy, and would not admit it at first.

Brown told the station she realized something was wrong when the boy disappeared Wednesday and the cousin couldn’t tell a straight story about what happened.

The cousin has been arrested but not yet formally charged. Demond was placed in his cousin’s custody after his father was arrested last month on an unrelated case.
