Infant found dead in bathroom

Posted May 14th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.lvrj.com

A newborn baby was found dead inside a women’s restroom at the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas. Hopefully with the 10 gazillion cameras they have in that town police can find out who did this.

Roberts said that when police arrived at the Excalibur, they found a baby boy wrapped in a pillowcase with some towels around him inside an Excalibur gift bag on the restroom’s floor.

He said tests are being done to determine whether the baby was breathing when he was born, but the investigation is being treated as a homicide.

Roberts said the infant had an intact placenta with an umbilical cord.

Police have no suspects, he said.

Girl found in Wisconsin likely not missing Las Vegas toddler

Posted May 2nd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.lvrj.com

A child recovered from a drug house in Wisconsin was first believed to be missing Las Vegas girl Everlyse Cabrera, but now authorities aren’t so sure.

Instead, Green Bay, Wis., police now believe the girl might be the child of a former inmate at a North Las Vegas women’s prison, one who gave birth in 2005 and surrendered the infant to relatives.

“Our preliminary investigation and our continuing investigation has led us to believe that she is not (Everlyse Cabrera),” Green Bay police Capt. Karl Fleury said. “But we can’t say that with 100 percent certainty until the DNA evidence comes back.”

DNA samples from the Wisconsin girl and from Everlyse are being tested, but police say it could take months to get the results.

Preemie death blamed on hospital screwup

Posted February 19th, 2008 by minortopics | via abcnews.go.com

With echoes of Dennis Quaid’s high-profile hospital case last year, it appears another hospital pharmacy made an error, this time resulting in the death of a premature infant:

[Kathleen] Shinn says she could tell [her daughter] Alyssa was on the brink of death.

“I just knew,” she said. “And I just started to cry hysterically, knowing that my daughter Alyssa was going to die.”

After confirming that no one else was going to visit Alyssa, physicians turned off the ventilator and the Shinns held their lifeless child for the first time. “We were able to put her in a little dress,” said Shinn. “And I got to hold her for the first time.”

The Shinns were told that, during the night, Alyssa had received a fatal overdose of zinc from her intravenous nutrition bag, a mistake made in the hospital pharmacy. Pam Goff, the lead pharmacist on duty, was summoned to see her supervisor.

“I just broke down into tears and I started to shake,” Goff said. “And I just sobbed uncontrollably. I went back to my desk and started to vomit and cry and shake.”

Teens shot in North Las Vegas departing school bus

Posted December 11th, 2007 by minortopics | via www.fox5vegas.com

Probably not the day to be asking, “How was school today?”

Six teenagers were shot with what witnesses reported as a semi-automatic or automatic gun, as they got off their school bus.

LAS VEGAS — Hospital officials said that only one teen remains in critical condition after six were shot during a bus stop shooting. One is still in serious condition while three have been upgraded to good condition and one male has been discharged from University Medical Center.

The shooting happened just before 2 p.m. Tuesday near Walnut and Alexander roads.

Students said they were exiting a school bus from Mojave High School when two teens shot six to 10 rounds at fellow riders. One girl and five boys were injured, two of whom were shot in the stomach and the rest in extremities.
