Indiana mom charged with neglect

Posted February 11th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.theindychannel.com

“Neglect” seems like a light charge for a mom who would cover up her boyfriend’s horrific abuse of her infant, but we guess we’ll have to take what we can get:

Prosecutors said [Krystal A. Pollitt’s live-in boyfriend, Jeremiah A. Hoots] beat Kaitlynne [Pollitt] on Dec. 17. The girl died a few days later.

An autopsy found the girl had two skull fractures, bleeding in the brain and a broken neck. Hoots told investigators that the girl was hurt while wresting with her brothers.

One of the victim’s two young brothers told investigators Hoots had tried to persuade him to take the blame for the girl’s injuries.

Children drown in car while mother tried to save them

Posted January 9th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.cnn.com

The forces of mother nature are something that cannot always be reckoned with.

Such a sad story, a mothers SUV gets stuck in rising flood waters and she must make a choice as to who to rescue first.

Just a horrible situation…

In northern Indiana, Megihann Leininger’s SUV stalled Tuesday on a flooded road near Rochester, about 45 miles south of South Bend, before floating into deeper water, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department said.

The first officer on the scene could see nothing except its roof rack, Mentone Fire Chief Mike Yazel said. He said Leininger, 29, was able to come to the surface and put three of her children on the roof: Mariah Leininger, 4, Michael McDaniel, 1, and Canari Trigg, 3 months.

It took several minutes for crews to rescue the four, but there was nothing they could do for Shay Leininger, 5, and Ashley Pruitt, 2, who were trapped underwater.

“The water was too deep, too cold, too fast,” Yazel said. Their mother “had to sit there on the roof, knowing that would be the worst part of the story,” he said.

Child predators in America’s schools

Posted October 22nd, 2007 by minortopics | via www.indystar.com

While law enforcement and parents are left scratching their heads as to why there has been a noticable increase in teachers sexually assualting children, one needn’t look past the reason why predators are teachers in the first place. It’s all about access. Occam’s razor. Predators choose professions that give them access to children. The question is, should parents be concerned? The answer is YES! The Boston area has similar findings with the epidemic that is teacher/coach predation in our schools:

It’s a parents’ nightmare. And it’s one of 30 accounts of sexual misconduct by licensed teachers and school employees recorded from 2001 to 2005 in Indiana, according to a review by The Associated Press.

Sexual misconduct was reported in all types of schools — urban and rural, rich and poor, private and public. Victims were girls and boys, from 17 years old to as young as 8. Crimes included child molesting, sexual battery and child pornography. And the teachers involved were often those who spend time with students outside the classroom — band directors, choir teachers or coaches.
