Boy burned after setting fire to deer

Posted July 2nd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.chicagotribune.com

Uh, you know what, we’ll just let the story speak for itself.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s deputies say the boy is being treated at an Indianapolis hospital for burns on his chest. Officials did not release his name or his condition.

Detective Greg Haltom says the boy and his brother found a small deer carcass in a rural area near Lafayette Tuesday and attempted to burn it in a barrel. Gasoline or some other flammable substance got on the boy’s T-shirt and it caught fire.

7-year-old totals Granny’s car

Posted June 26th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.indystar.com

An (apparently very tall) 7-year-old in Muncie, Indiana took his grandmother’s car for a joy ride, and amazingly got pretty far.

Matthew Sands could not believe the driver of a red Geo Tracker that passed him on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard this morning.

“He was awful small to be driving,” said Sands, 43, of Hartford City.

Sands and another driver who followed the vehicle soon learned why the driver was so small; he turned out to be a seven-year-old boy behind the wheel of his grandmother’s Geo, according to police…

Police speculated the boy might have learned to drive from a PlayStation video game.

Infant’s genitals injured by puppy

Posted June 17th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.chicagotribune.com

What’s perhaps more shocking than a puppy attacking a baby’s genitals is that it’s not the first time it’s happened.

The infant was lying next to his sleeping mother in her bed when the 6-month-old cairn terrier-poodle mix attacked Saturday. His mother had gone to bed about 6 a.m. after returning from her job delivering newspapers, police said. She was awakened about seven hours later by her 5-year-old child who wanted help with the television remote control.

She noticed her infant had been moved from his original position, his diaper was missing and he had blood on him, according to a police report. The boy was taken to St. Joseph Hospital and was moved to Lutheran Hospital to undergo surgery. The dog was euthanized.

Fort Wayne police spokesman Michael Joyner said the boy is doing fine.

“Obviously he’s got some major medical issues concerning his genitalia,” he said.

Girl swallows 20 steel balls and 10 magnets

Posted June 3rd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.foxnews.com

By now most parents are aware of the dangers of toys containing small powerful magnets. For those that aren’t, if more than one is swallowed they have the potential to attract each other and cause, let’s just say “gastronomic distress”. Usually reported cases where children were harmed or even died involve toddlers and babies — but in a recent case, an 8-year-old girl swallowed a whole mess of the things and now her parents want an all out ban:

Haley Lents of Huntingburg underwent emergency intestinal surgery last month in Indianapolis after she swallowed pieces from her Mega Brands Magnetix MagnaCase set.

She was taken to the emergency room for stomach pains, and an X-ray revealed the force from the magnets had torn her intestines in eight places.

Doctors told Haley’s parents her intestines looked like they had been punctured by eight gunshot wounds or stab-like holes, Haley’s father told CBS’ Early Show on Monday; it is being reported by cbsnews.com.

Haley, who spent two weeks in the hospital, is lucky to be alive, doctors said, according to cbsnews.com.

Um, anyone else wondering why at that age this girl is swallowing thirty metal objects? One or two, maybe, but thirty? That takes some serious effort!

12-year-old facing charges for shooting friend

Posted May 23rd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.indystar.com

A 12-year-old in Danville, Indiana has been charged after a gun he was showing to a friend fired and shot the boy.

The 12-year-old boy was charged Thursday in juvenile court with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, according to a news release from Danville police.

The boy was home alone with a 10-year-old neighbor after school Tuesday when he found a key and unlocked a safe in which his parents kept an unloaded gun, police said. Police think the boy loaded the gun and was showing it off to his friend when it accidentally discharged.

Police initially reported in error that the 12-year-old had shot himself.

Man sentenced to 32 years for child molestation

Posted May 22nd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.indystar.com

A 20-year-old who broke into a house into an Indiana house and sexually assaulted a 5-year-old girl has been sentenced to 32 years in prison. We think there should be an extra zero at the end, but we’ll take it over a slap on the wrist that some of these sickos receive.

The girl has needed counseling, and her parents learned that she contracted a sexually transmitted disease from Jesus Alberto Valenzuela, Deputy Prosecutor Gillian DePrez said during a sentencing hearing.

A Marion Superior Court judge sentenced Valenzuela to 32 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to burglary and child molesting charges stemming from the early morning break-in Aug. 24.

Valenzuela, 20, nodded as an interpreter translated Senior Judge Charles Wiles’ questions before accepting his plea.

The girl’s parents attended but didn’t testify. The family has moved from the city.

Belle Gunness may have killed children as well as suitors

Posted May 14th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.chicagotribune.com

Belle Gunness, a notorious serial killer from Indiana at the turn of the 20th century, may have murdered children.

Investigators gingerly peeled back the brittle lining of the small caskets buried a century ago in a Forest Park cemetery, revealing the remains of three children—orange-stained ribs, leg bones, pieces of skull. They were jarringly mingled with hair and bits of charred tissue, hinting at the house fire that finally put authorities on the trail of a cunning serial killer.

“We couldn’t have asked for anything better than this,” said forensic anthropologist Stephen Nawrocki on the condition of the bones of a 5-year-old boy found in one of the metal caskets. “This is going to come out just beautifully.”

The exhumations were part of a broadening quest to shed light on the mystery of Belle Gunness, a wealthy widow accused of murdering as many as 30 men, women and children, often dismembering the bodies at her hilltop farm in LaPorte, Ind.

Boy drowns in grandparent’s pool

Posted May 5th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.chicagotribune.com

An Indiana toddler that had been reported missing has been found drowned in his grandparent’s swimming pool. He was at the bottom of the pool, which is probably why he was not noticed right away.

Caidyn Bugby was playing outside at his grandparent’s Anderson home Sunday as they did yard work.

Madison County Sheriff’s Department Maj. Brian Bell says the grandparents called police to report the boy missing. Officers found the boy at the bottom of the family’s in-ground swimming pool.

Emergency personnel spent about 40 minutes trying to resuscitate the boy.

Toddler struck, killed by train

Posted May 2nd, 2008 by minortopics | via abclocal.go.com

A 2-year-old in Gary, Indiana was struck and killed by a passing freight train when he was playing too close to the tracks near his home.

The train’s engineer saw the boy but could not stop in time. Gary Police say they don’t expect charges to be filed against the parents of Ryan Watson and are calling his death a tragic accident. But the boy’s family sees things a little differently. They say if there was some sort of fence around the tracks he might still be alive.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do without him. He was so close to me,” said Janet Watson, victim’s grandmother

Naked toddler’s dad up on charges

Posted March 17th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.indystar.com

The father of a toddler that was found naked wandering along a busy street has been charged with child neglect and — quelle surprise! — drug possession. What makes this story especially notable is that it’s the SECOND TIME IT’S HAPPENED THIS WEEK.

Glen DeCocker, 26, of South Bend was booked Thursday on a felony count of child neglect and two misdemeanors, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia, said St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Banicki. He was released Saturday on $1,000 bond.

An employee at a Speedway gas station and several customers told police they saw DeCocker’s naked 2-year-old son walking near the station Thursday night along a busy section of Indiana 933.

Officers had responded to a similar call at the same location involving the same boy on Tuesday.

Dad forces daughter to kill cat

Posted March 14th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.indystar.com

Our wife hates our cat with a passion, but at the most she complains about it and conveniently “forgets” to close the door so it will run away. A man in Muncie, Indiana took his pet hatred to a whole new level — he has been arrested after he allegedly forced his 7-year-old daughter to kill the family cat by holding a knife in her hand and making her stab it. Not surprisingly, there was alcohol involved.

An affidavit filed Thursday in Delaware County alleges Collins told his 11-year-old son and daughter he wanted them to “learn how to kill” and ordered them to kill the family’s pet cat.

The siblings told police their father was drunk when they were dropped off for a visit at his Muncie residence, according to the affidavit. They said he is “a different person” when he’s drunk.

Brown said that when Collins was in the bathroom, the boy took the knife his father had given him to kill the cat and hid the animal under a sofa bed. The boy then ran to the kitchen and put ketchup on the knife to make it look as if the cat had been killed.

When Collins realized the cat was not dead, Brown said, he forced his daughter to hold the knife and then held her hand tightly as he drove the knife into the animal. The girl said he held her hand so hard that her hand ached, an injury that led to the battery charge.

Boys give mom CPR, save her life

Posted February 22nd, 2008 by minortopics | via abclocal.go.com

Finally, a feel good story around here. And also an important lesson about teaching your kids basic first aid lessons. Three boys in northwest Indiana, ranging from ages 9 to 14, called 911 and performed CPR on their mother, Deanna Faught, after she passed out in their home from a severe asthma attack. Their actions are being credited with saving Faught’s life:

“She wasn’t breathing. Her heart stopped beating. And they do the mouth-to-mouth thing and I pushed the stomach for her. And we switched,” said Scott Kuta, Deanna’s son.

“God was on our side and everything,” said Dawson Kuta, Deanna’s son.

“We were pretty happy that my mom is all right and everything,” said Dakota Kuta, Deanna’s son.

Emergency room doctor Jonathan Renkas says those extra minutes of life support kept Faught going until paramedics arrived.

“The kids allowed this woman probably to oxygenate, or get help for a long enough period of time, where EMS was able to arrive and resuscitate her and get her to the emergency room for more care,” said Dr. Jonathan Renkas, Methodist Hospital.

Indiana mom charged with neglect

Posted February 11th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.theindychannel.com

“Neglect” seems like a light charge for a mom who would cover up her boyfriend’s horrific abuse of her infant, but we guess we’ll have to take what we can get:

Prosecutors said [Krystal A. Pollitt’s live-in boyfriend, Jeremiah A. Hoots] beat Kaitlynne [Pollitt] on Dec. 17. The girl died a few days later.

An autopsy found the girl had two skull fractures, bleeding in the brain and a broken neck. Hoots told investigators that the girl was hurt while wresting with her brothers.

One of the victim’s two young brothers told investigators Hoots had tried to persuade him to take the blame for the girl’s injuries.

A behavior teacher perpetuating the stereo-type that those who can’t — teach, was wrestling with a middle school student and proceeded to break the student’s finger as the teacher called for submission. The principal is citing horse play while the parents are implying a lawsuit.

Scott Porter recently broke an index finger of Jordan Mundy (pictured) as they were wrestling each other during an anger-management class, Jordan and the school’s principal said.

These people make Britney Spears look like a model parent.

What a bunch of assholes.

Poor baby. He had the blood alcohol level above what is allowable for an ADULT to be allowed to drive.

MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) - A Muncie woman and her boyfriend are behind bars after allegedly giving alcohol to an 11 month old baby. Police say the little boy’s blood alcohol level was 0.118.

Investigators call this the epitome of irresponsible parenting. The couple claims the boy accidentally drank the alcohol but detectives say this was no accident.

Empty beer bottles sit just feet away from the home at 30 Mulberry Street. This is where investigators say 19-year old Amanda Elbert lived with her son and boyfriend, Edward Williams.
