Toddler gets lucky with 2nd heart

Posted June 26th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.startribune.com

A 20-month-old whose first heart transplant did not take, amazingly found another donor within days and so far so good.

Today a heart is beating strongly in Kobe’s chest — after a second transplant last week. It’s a first for the Mayo Clinic, doing two heart transplants on one child in the span of a week.

“We were very, very lucky,” said Dr. Joseph Dearani, Kobe’s transplant surgeon. “And sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.”

Kobe was diagnosed at three months with a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. For no known reason his heart became enlarged and weak. Other than drugs to help his heart pump, there is no treatment. Except a transplant.

Man accused of attempted child abduction

Posted June 25th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.startribune.com

A Duluth, Minnesota man is being brought up on charges after he allegedly tried to nab a baby strapped into a car seat.

Sgt. Jeff Skuza says the woman parked her vehicle in a garage at an apartment building. Skuza says she placed the baby in a car seat next to the vehicle while she tended to another child.

Skuza says a man walked up and took the car seat with the baby in it and started to walk away. He says the two got into a tug-of-war, with the woman trying to prevent the man from leaving.

Skuza says a friend of the man saw the struggle and pulled him away. The baby was not hurt.
