Baby born U.S. citizen on bridge from Mexico

Posted July 2nd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.chron.com

A mother waiting in line to enter the United States on El Paso’s Bridge of the Americas gave birth, making the baby a full-fledged U.S. citizen. Good thing she didn’t let anyone take cuts!

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers delivered the child as his mother — a 23-year-old Mexican woman who had a green card to live in the U.S. — went into labor. The woman walked across the bridge, which spans the Rio Grande, at 3 a.m.

She was sent to a lobby for questioning before being allowed to enter the country, although the office is on U.S. soil, said Rick Lopez, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection.

The woman told officers she was going into labor, so they grabbed blankets from a nearby holding cell, Lopez said.

Police investigating death of Colorado baby

Posted March 18th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.rockymountainnews.com

Police were called to an El Paso County, Colorado hospital Friday night after a 2-month-old infant was pronounced dead and who appeared to have suffered some sort of injury:

Police were called to Memorial Hospital about 6:30 p.m. Friday, where Preston James Cheever was unconscious and not breathing, police said.

The baby’s mother drove part of the way to the hospital from a home in the 5900 block of Bestview Way, but an ambulance met her and took the child to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police on Friday said the infant had injuries, but did not know what caused them.

The county coroner has determined that little Preston died from blunt force trauma to the head.
