An 11-year-old boy in Compton, California died after being hit in the chest with a baseball.

Coroner’s office spokesman Ed Winter says Whaley Middle School student Alberto Patino had complained of chest pain before he was struck by the baseball Friday afternoon. The boy then had trouble breathing and collapsed.

Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and the boy was declared dead at St. Francis Medical Center.

A 13-year-old boy in Compton, California has pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of his 8-year-old cousin.

Prosecutors say the boy opened fire July 23 into an apartment courtyard in an apparent gang retaliation shooting. A stray bullet struck and killed Jasmine Sanders while she played with friends in South Los Angeles.

The boy’s mother, grandmother and an uncle were in court Wednesday but did not talk to reporters. The boy’s name has not been released because he is a minor.

Two taggers spray painted a 6-year-old boy’s face and body after he spotted them scrawling gang signs on a wall, officials said today.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Capt. James Hellmold said the boy suffered burns to his eyes in the June 25 attack and was sprayed over his arms and other parts of his body. He suffered no permanent damage and was doing well, Hellmold said.

“This definitely shocks the consciousness and is out of the ordinary, even in the gang culture,” Hellmold said. “It makes no sense to the normal human being.”
