Teen shot after egging car

Posted September 2nd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.foxnews.com

Apparently these teenagers picked the wrong vehicle to mess with.

Police said 16-year-old Garrett Burton was with at least one other teenage boy Saturday in the backyard of a home when someone shot him in the head just before 3 a.m. Police have no suspects.

The band at Westland High School, where Burton was a student, played the school’s alma mater in memory of him at Saturday night’s football game.

Toddler escapes day care, crosses busy street

Posted June 12th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.10tv.com

We have a feeling business might take a downturn at this particular day care.

A child care center said it has made changes after a toddler wandered out of the building and crossed a downtown street late last month.

The 2-year-old boy walked past two receptionists at the Columbus State Childcare facility, located on Spring Street, and out the automatic doors, 10TV News reported.

The boy had already walked across Mount Vernon Avenue when he was spotted by a worker.

The worker returned the boy safely to the child care facility, 10TV News reported.

Teen thwarts intruders with text message

Posted May 1st, 2008 by minortopics | via www.foxnews.com

We know we’re going to sound old, but we just have to say that we get annoyed with the teens today always texting, texting, texting. Not to mention how just the noun-turned-verb word “texting” is an assault on the English language. But when we read this story about how a teen’s texting skills caught some bad guys, it softened our attitude a bit.

Lauren Durnbaugh, 13, didn’t go to school Tuesday and was home when she heard someone open an unlocked rear door. She climbed into bed and hid under the covers as the suspects began ransacking rooms in the house about 15 miles southeast of Columbus, authorities said.

“OMG. They’re in the house. I think we’re being robbed,” Durnbaugh said in a text message to her mother, Margo Roby, 53, who was working at a car dealership about 15 minutes away.

Racing home, Roby called 911. Back in the house, the intruders roamed from room to room, and at one point sat on Lauren’s bed, police said.

Good for you, Lauren! If it was us, with our uncoordinated giant thumbs, the message would have said something like “OMg thr nthe hrse roejfoskdffasd;fkasfd”.

Fugitive father, three kids found dead in Georgia

Posted March 20th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.ajc.com

Two weeks after Columbus, Georgia man Eddie Harrington kidnapped his three children — 23-month-old twin girls Agena and Aliyah Battle and his 3-year-old son Cedric — they have all been found, but it’s not a happy ending:

A Columbus man and his three young children were found dead in some Muscogee County woods Wednesday, two weeks after the man took the youngsters and left letters threatening to kill them and himself, the FBI said.

FBI spokesman Steve Emmett said the four bodies were found just after noon in a wooded area of Muscogee County, which includes the city of Columbus.

Harrington was the children’s biological father, Emmett said. He did not know why the man took them. Their mother, Agena Battle, discovered them gone when she got home early March 5.

Battle called police because Harrington had left a note on the bedroom dresser saying he was depressed and didn’t want to live and that he planned to kill himself and the youngsters, the FBI said. Harrington’s father in Indianapolis got a similar letter.

Columbus police issued a warrant for Harrington’s arrest for child endangerment. A Levi’s Call was issued, and roadside alerts asked motorists to watch for Harrington’s dark green 2002 Chevrolet Impala.
