Birthing centers reject free infant formula

Posted August 7th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.redorbit.com

Two North Carolina birthing centers are being applauded by breastfeeding advocates for refusing to accept free infant formula to pass on to their patients.

UNC Health Care stopped distributing the bags in late June. The Women’s Birth and Wellness Center in Chapel Hill never gave away the bags.

The Golden Bow Awards are from the nonprofit N.C. Breast-feeding Coalition, a group of lactation consultants, nurses and other women’s health professionals.

Coalition members started the campaign, a version of a national effort to ban the bags, in February. Four other hospitals in North Carolina received the award earlier this year.

Studies show that the free bags make it easier for new moms to stop breast-feeding.

Emily Taylor of the the Center for Infant and Young Child Feeding and Care at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said mothers perceive the free bags and formula as an endorsement of a particular brand from the hospital.

4 burning children rescued from van

Posted January 18th, 2008 by minortopics | via news14.com

What a scary situation.

Just another reason to reconsider leaving children unattended in a car. There is so much than can happen, besides this freak accident, it could be an abduction or a child getting out and running in front of a car.

“I couldn’t get over there fast enough,” said Michael Wright. He lives next door to the convenience store on West Craighead Road when someone told him the car was on fire with kids, ages three-months to five-years old, inside.

“When I opened the door, that’s when I found out how really intense the flames were. And the kids just were engulfed. I was trying. I had my foot trying to pull the seat belt they were strapped in. I was trying to do anything because it was just really intense,” said Wright.

In the video (see cited link), you can see the mother and Wright were struggling to get the kids out of the burning car. However, it wasn’t until the store owner came out with an extinguisher they were able to cool the car down enough to get the kids out.
