Girls benefit more from breastfeeding than boys

Posted June 2nd, 2008 by minortopics | via uk.reuters.com

A new study out of Buenos Aires reports that in one aspect — respiratory infections — girls benefit from breastfeeding more than boys.

They found that infant girls who were breast-fed were far less likely than baby boys who were breast-fed to develop serious respiratory infections requiring hospitalization.

A lot of research has shown that breast-fed babies enjoy a range of health benefits compared to those given baby formula beyond combating respiratory infections.

These include fewer ear, stomach or intestinal infections, digestive problems, skin diseases and allergies, and less risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. And some research has shown breast-fed babies are smarter, too.

“There are many, many different diseases that are protected against by breast-feeding. It’s a great source of nutrition. It’s important for development. Everyone benefits from breast-feeding,” Dr. Fernando Polack of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, one of the researchers, said in a telephone interview.

Buenos Aires man sentenced for keeping daughter as sex slave

Posted May 22nd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.foxnews.com

What the hell is going on in Argentina? A man in Buenos Aires has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for keeping his daughter as a sex slave.

[Eleuterio] Soria’s trial revealed that he began abusing his daughter in 1992, when she was 12 years old. The following year she became pregnant by her father, prompting her mother to leave their home in La Matanza, a working-class Buenos Aires district. The family’s five other siblings eventually left as well.

The daughter, whose name was not released, had a second child by her father in 1997. Unlike Fritzl, Soria used psychological domination rather than physical restraints to keep her in the house. She did flee on various occasions, but would return home after he threatened their two children — often at gunpoint.

She finally escaped for good in 2003 and denounced her father to authorities. Argentine psychologists weren’t surprised that it took her more than a decade to tell authorities.

Of course the media is quick to bring up the similarities to Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man who kept is daughter trapped in a cellar for 24 years.

Jesus, how could kids so young turn into such monsters? Two brothers — ages 7 and 9 — kidnapped a toddler and tortured her to death.

Lttle Milagros, 2, disappeared from her shanty home in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Sunday and her family later found her body in a vacant lot 10 blocks away.

She had been stripped naked, beaten and strangled with telephone cord that was left around her neck. The discovery prompted neighbours to attack an adult suspected of the crime - until the two boys confessed.

It was revealed today the pair took sick delight in torturing their victim.
