Boy Parachutes With Plastic Bag

Posted April 16th, 2009 by minortopics | via www.foxnews.com

A New York boy jumped to his death off his apartment building’s roof when he used a plastic bag as a parachute.

Police say Domori Miles likely cobbled a plastic bag and rope together before flying off the 13-story Brooklyn building Tuesday. The items were found on the ground near his body.

Ten-year-old friend Shakar Murrel says Domori was a fan of the wrestling game “WWE SmackDown vs. Raw” and loved wrestler Jeff Hardy’s swan dives.

A Brooklyn mother left her baby outside in freezing condition.

Maria Solano, 28, left the baby boy in front of a building two doors down from her home and then rang several doorbells before running, cops said.

The boy - wrapped in a blanket and stuffed in a plastic bag - had his umbilical cord attached and was believed to be only a few hours old when he was discovered at 5:40 a.m., cops said. He was in stable condition at Lutheran Hospital.

Parents don’t want to end brain-dead boy’s care

Posted November 10th, 2008 by minortopics | via ap.google.com

A couple described by the AP as “ultra-religious” (is that term in the AP stylebook?) are fighting to keep their brain-dead son on life support.

Motl Brody of Brooklyn was pronounced dead this week after a half-year fight against a brain tumor.

Doctors at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington say the seventh-grader’s brain has ceased functioning entirely. But Motl’s parents, who are Orthodox Jews, are refusing the hospital’s request to remove all artificial life support.

They say their son is alive because his heart and lungs are still working. A machine inflates and deflates his lungs and drugs help his heart beat.

A Brooklyn, New York woman has admitted to fatally beating her 11-year-old daughter with a mop.

The girl, Alejandra Vazquez, was found dead Sunday in the family’s Atlantic Avenue apartment — three days after she was left whimpering in her bedroom.

The mother and her unidentified boyfriend — the father of two of her other children — called 911 after a man renting a room from them saw the girl lying motionless, according to the Daily News.

New place to bring the kids in NYC - a sex shop

Posted June 16th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.foxnews.com

A sex shop has opened in the trendy Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, and they’re billing themselves as “kid-friendly”.

Unlike the older sex shops, which are dark and dingy, the Babeland store has upbeat music, well-dressed saleswomen and infant changing tables — marketing itself as a fun place for couples to shop. It’s part of a growing trend that has been spreading from Louisville to Los Angeles in an attempt to take the sleaze out of this part of the sex industry.

“If you walk into a mainstream sex store, you’ll probably be greeted with explicit imagery and a sort of artificial sexuality, like a woman with blonde hair with her head thrown back, something that’s meant to titillate in the moment,” said Babelands’s owner Claire Cavanah.

This store, which officially opens its doors Sunday, is the fifth Babeland for Cavanah, who opened the first store in Seattle, Wash., with friend and business partner Rachel Venning in 1993. Since then, the two have opened shops in New York City and one in Los Angeles, which closed this year.

Dad murdered with corkscrew

Posted February 15th, 2008 by minortopics | via abclocal.go.com

You have to be pretty sick to walk into a house and murder someone, but to use a corkscrew to do it? Whomever committed this act is one twisted individual (no pun intended, we swear to god) that needs to be found and locked up FAST. What a painful and horrific way to die.

The victim, a father of six, lived in the home for nearly 30 years. His 11-year-old daughter was the one who found him.

They checked in on the girl’s dad, Murat Saint Hilaire, Wednesday night, because they were worried.

They hadn’t heard from the 55-year-old in days and he missed work.

They never imagined what they’d find.

“She said ‘Call 911, call 911,’” Renelique said. “‘Because I don’t like what I saw,’ she said, she went inside and said ‘Something happened. He’s dead.’”

The little girl found her dad’s lifeless body on the bedroom floor.

The murder weapon: a corkscrew lodged in his head.

NYC parents hate on NCLB

Posted January 21st, 2008 by minortopics | via ap.google.com

New York’s Department of Education just recently started awarding schools a “letter grade” based on how well students do on standardized tests. This measure is largely influenced by No Child Left Behind’s accountability measures. Well some yuppie parents in Park Slope and elsewhere are getting their panties in a wad because their hoity-toity schools are getting Bs, Cs, and even — oh, the horror - Ds:

“It really saddens me that this is how the Department of Education thinks that parents are best served, by boiling everything that happens in an entire school to a letter grade,” said Lee Solomon, the mother of a first-grader at the Brooklyn New School, a sought-after school that accepts students only by lottery but got a C.

Jim Devor, the father of a fifth-grader at P.S. 58 in Brooklyn — which got a D on its report card_ said students there were “strongly invited” to attend Saturday test-prep sessions but have no time to discuss current events like the presidential campaign.

“I’m appalled at how little my child knows about social studies,” he said. “They’re all obsessed with test prep.”

For the record, we’re just having a little fun — we’re not exactly big fans of “teaching to the test”, either. But you just know some of these parents aren’t as concerned about teaching methods as much as an affront on their social status symbol…
