Editor FAQ

What is a Minor Topic’s Editor?

Minor Topics Editors are people that have an interest in any given news topic that pertains to parenting and/or children. As we can’t obviously read every piece of news out there, Editors help us by finding local and national news stories that may be of interest to themselves or other parents. Editors take a snippet of the news copy from various news stories and post them with or without their own editorial comments.

What are the qualifications?

There are no formal qualifications except a strong desire to share interesting stories and/or editorials and engage in comment discussions. If that’s you, apply here.

Is an Editor in charge of only one topic?

Only if you want to be. You can decide to focus on one area of interest (i.e., “child abuse stories”) or you can post in any topic across the network.

What kind of things can I post?

You can either write a short original editorial, or you can share stories from news sites around the web along with a brief summary/comment. Using a snippet from the story is encouraged, but please limit this to a couple paragraphs instead of the entire copyrighted material as this falls outside the scope of “fair use”.

How do I post a new article?

First, you need to be logged in. This will take you directly to the Editor admin area. Minor Topics uses the Wordpress blog software for its backend, and it is very intuitive. Simply click “Write”, fill in the fields, click submit, and your content will immediately appear on our site.

There are 2 ways to find content:

  • News wires/websites/blogs: If you see a great parenting related story on the web that hasn’t already been covered on Minor Topics, simply write a brief summary/editorial comment, add a relevant snippet of the article, and copy/paste a link to the original story.
  • Be your own reporter: If you’ve got the scoop on some local hot news in your area, here’s your opportunity to break it to the world. Simply write a brief synopsis of what happened, link to any relevant sources, and off you go. Just be sure to have your facts straight, and do not post anything that is potentially libelous.

How many times do I have to post?

You may post as often as you wish.

Why would I want to be an Minor Topics Editor?

It’s fun! It also gives you a forum in which you can express your ideas and opinions to other parents regarding current events.

How will I know if I’m accepted and what do I do from there?

You will get an approval email with instructions as to how to start, where to get your news pieces, policies and restrictions and pertinent technical information.

Are Minor Topics editors paid?

No.

Can a third party pay me to post stories on Minor Topics?

No. Minor Topics does not allow posting of stories on our site for profit. We want news we’re all interested in from reliable sources, not press releases or editors posting with personal or financial motives. If you believe an editor is violating these terms, you may send an email to editor@minortopics.com and we will review the situation.

So, where do I apply?
