Boy drowns hours after he gets out of pool

Posted June 6th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.msnbc.msn.com

A 10 year old boy experienced a very rare and tragic death when, hours after he had gone swimming, he drowned from an occurance called “dry drowning”. Apparently, the lungs fill up with water at some point and slowly causes a lack of oxygen. Tiredness, behavior changes and difficulty breathing.

On Sunday, Jackson had taken her son, Johnny, to a pool near their home in Goose Creek, S.C. It was the first time he’d ever gone swimming — and, tragically, it would be his last.

At some point during his swim, Johnny got some water in his lungs. He didn’t show any immediate signs of respiratory distress, but the boy had an accident in the pool and soiled himself. Still, Johnny, his sister and their mother walked home together.

“We physically walked home. He walked with me,” Jackson said, still trying to understand how her son could have died. “I bathed him, and he told me that he was sleepy.”

Toddler hit by train

Posted June 1st, 2008 by minortopics | via cbs2chicago.com

Hopefully this will be the last little kid hit by train story this month. What a horrific way for a child to die.

The tracks running through part of West Chicago are next to a large unfenced, empty field. That’s where 3-year-old Adriana Chew had been playing with her 8-year-old sister, just east of the railroad tracks.

When they headed for home, they crossed the tracks into the path of an oncoming southbound EJ&E freight train. Her sister made it across, Adriana did not.

Family members rushed to the injured girl.

“They all went over there and apparently she was trying to get up, and she just said I love you and that was it,” said family friend Rita Schauer.

Napa toddler killed by hit and run driver

Posted June 1st, 2008 by minortopics | via abclocal.go.com

A 2-year-old in Napa, California that was reported missing was found later along the side of the road, apparently the victim of a hit and run driver.

The juvenile hall employee looked along the road and found the toddler lying unconscious near the curb across from the juvenile detention facility.

The employee carried the child across the street and began CPR. Paramedics arrived and also attempted to revive the child before taking her by ambulance to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Napa police were investigating the incident as a hit-and-run and called the department’s accident reconstruction team to the scene to diagram the area where the girl was found.

Parents, child shot to death in Chicago suburb

Posted May 29th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.chicagotribune.com

Police were called to a home in Roselle, Illinois where the found a gruesome scene — a man, his wife, and their 7 year old son had been shot to death. Statements made by police officials seem to imply this was possibly a murder suicide.

Though police provided few details, they said the investigation is confined to the house and a killer is not believed to be at large. Police said that there were no signs of forced entry and that a handgun was found at the scene.

The woman’s mother called police about 11:45 a.m. after finding her daughter in the second-floor master bedroom of the house in the 700 block of North Woodfield Trail. The woman had gone to the home to check on her daughter after she missed a doctor’s appointment, police said.

Body found believed to be missing college student

Posted May 28th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.foxnews.com

A body pulled from Otter Creek in Vermont is believed to be Nicholas Garza, a college student who vanished in February.

Some here believed the melting of snow at winter’s end would yield clues or a body, but it didn’t, nor did several searches of Otter Creek, including one last month after aerial imaging showed an unidentified object in the water.

Mrs. Garza had been living on the Middlebury College campus since shortly after the disappearance and enrolled her 9-year-old son in school here.

“The remains have been in the water for a long time. They are not in good shape,” said Hanley.

The autopsy is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday at the office of the chief medical examiner in Burlington, he said.

Could this be the work of the Smiley Face Killers?

Boy killed riding bike across train tracks

Posted May 26th, 2008 by minortopics | via news.bostonherald.com

A 5-year-old boy riding his bike with his mother tried to cross rail tracks and was struck by a train he didn’t see.

The crossing gates were down at the time, but the boy may have thought it was safe to cross because a southbound train had passed the crossing moments before the northbound train arrived, said Pesaturo.

Garbarino’s death is believed to have been accidental, but state and transit police were still investigating last night. The boy’s family could not be reached for comment.

Toddler falls off cliff in Chimney Rock state park

Posted May 26th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.charlotte.com

How devastating. A 2-year-old boy hiking with his parents slipped under a railing on the slide of a trail and fell to his death.

Through an interpreter, the boy’s mother told police she was holding her child’s hand while walking between him and the rail overlooking the cliff when he suddenly pulled away from her, said Charlie Peek, spokesman for the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation, which manages the park.

The boy ran, then slipped under the rail of the boardwalk along the Skyline Trail and fell more than 100 feet to the Cliff Trail below, Peek said.

Park officials don’t recommend those trails for families with small children because of the cliffs, a caution that is spelled out on trail maps given to visitors. But many families still take children on the trail.

Baby found in freezer

Posted May 24th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.myfoxhouston.com

A baby, reportedly under the age of 1 and deeply frozen from being in the freezer for at least a year, was found in a hotel freezer in Houston, Texas.

Why did they wait so long to report it and why report it all if they seemingly were getting away with it. Perhaps an argument that prompted revenge?

MT hopes that a murder investigation will ensue.

A baby boy found dead in a southwest Houston motel freezer may have been there since May 2007, Houston police said at a Friday press conference.

Police say baby Devin was found Friday morning wearing a diaper wrapped in blankets inside a gym bag and frozen solid, police said. Detectives say Devin’s mother, Crystal Sosa, 25, and her common-law husband, Dezmond Blake, 29, had been using the refrigerator’s freezer while his body still inside.

Toddler dies after run over by mom

Posted May 21st, 2008 by minortopics | via www.dallasnews.com

A mother in Garland, Texas, accidentally ran over her 2-year-old with her car, not expecting the child to be outside late at night.

Police said that little Marvin Segovia and his brother were taken outside by their father to look at the stars.

When the mother returned from a trip to the grocery store, she apparently ran over Marvin when the toddler wandered into the driveway, police said.

The mother at first did not realize she had struck the child. That realization only came moments later when she heard her husband’s screams from the front yard, police said.

Pit Bulls kill 7 year old boy

Posted May 20th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.chron.com

Why is it, you never hear of a gang of pugs killing children? Well, they don’t have the capability to. Pit Bulls are a disgrace to our society and harmful to children. Children need to come first. They’re far more important than dogs who are bred to look for a thrill kill.

ABILENE — A 7-year-old boy died after he was apparently attacked by pit bulls while playing outside near his rural home, authorities said.

A driver saw Tanner Joshua Monk of Breckenridge lying next to a road near Hubbard Lake on Sunday with two pit bulls nearby and stopped to check on the child, Stephens County Sheriff Jim Reeves said. When she left her car, the dogs became aggressive and she called 911, he said.

The dogs also became aggressive toward the two deputies who arrived, and they shot and killed them. The deputies found that Tanner was dead, Reeves said in today’s edition of the Abilene Reporter-News.

Flooding river claims toddler’s life

Posted May 19th, 2008 by minortopics | via seattlepi.nwsource.com

A 21-month-old has drowned and two men are missing in Lewis County, Washington, where the Green and Cedar rivers are swelling.

Nine other people were rescued Saturday after river accidents in King County — and police say some are lucky to be alive.

Sheriff’s Sgt. John Urquhart said a 45-year-old Seattle man was with three others Saturday when he went underwater in his kayak and failed to reappear on the surface downstream from Kanasket Palmer State Park.

Because of the steep cliffs on both sides of the river, the group could not reach a place where they could get out and call authorities for more than an hour. The search was suspended Sunday evening until the Green River water level decreased.
