Boy dies in crash resulting from drag race

Posted May 9th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.newsday.com

Some asshats decided to go all Fast and the Furious on a residential street, and now a young boy is dead because of it.

What neighbors said was a drag race along a residential street in Queens turned deadly early yesterday when one of the speeding cars hit a sport utility vehicle, throwing a 5-year-old boy from the backseat and killing him one block from his home, police said.

Police last night were looking for two men who fled on foot after crashing a blue BMW at 164th Place and 109th Avenue in Jamaica. Police said the BMW 540 was bought under the name of Hendry James. Police said James is not a suspect and has reported his identity stolen.

The BMW was speeding east on 109th Avenue when the car struck the SUV carrying the boy, Jordan McLean, his mother, Marcia McEachron, 44, and his aunt, Claris Edwards, 50, of Far Rockaway, shortly after midnight, police said. Jordan was in the back passenger seat, and was not strapped into a car seat or wearing a seat belt, police said.

Father sacrifices self to save girl from car

Posted May 7th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.foxnews.com

We think a vast majority of parents would be willing to lay down their own lives for our children. Fortunately, most of us don’t have to prove it. Sadly that was not the case for a father in Chicago:

Joseph Richardson was walking his daughter Kaniyah to a McDonald’s for burgers late Monday when a car jumped the curb. Police say the 39-year-old Richardson grabbed his daughter just before the car slammed the two into a fence.

Richardson was pronounced dead at the scene. Kaniyah was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in serious condition.

Police say the driver of the car, 32-year-old Angelo Thomas of Chicago, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated DUI. Witnesses say the man was driving erratically before the accident.

Boy drowns in grandparent’s pool

Posted May 5th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.chicagotribune.com

An Indiana toddler that had been reported missing has been found drowned in his grandparent’s swimming pool. He was at the bottom of the pool, which is probably why he was not noticed right away.

Caidyn Bugby was playing outside at his grandparent’s Anderson home Sunday as they did yard work.

Madison County Sheriff’s Department Maj. Brian Bell says the grandparents called police to report the boy missing. Officers found the boy at the bottom of the family’s in-ground swimming pool.

Emergency personnel spent about 40 minutes trying to resuscitate the boy.

8 year old killed by unsecured soccer post

Posted May 4th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.azcentral.com

A tragic ending for a young boy when a soccer goal post fell over, hit him in the head, causing fatal injuries. The accident happened because the soccer goal was not properly anchored into the ground.

Although the article claims the YMCA was going to pay funeral costs, this is an instance where a settlement is probably in order. Although the posts aren’t meant to be hanging off of, he was only 8 and the after school program should have provided safety and supervision that was obviously lacking.

An 8-year-old boy died after a goal post fell on him during a Thursday soccer game at the South Mountain YMCA.

Gabriel Mendoza was hanging on the crossbar of a soccer goal post around 6 p.m. Thursday when it fell.

Gabriel was at a soccer game with his grandmother, said YMCA spokeswoman Norma Salas. He was participating in a YMCA after-school program called Activate Area.

Toddler struck, killed by train

Posted May 2nd, 2008 by minortopics | via abclocal.go.com

A 2-year-old in Gary, Indiana was struck and killed by a passing freight train when he was playing too close to the tracks near his home.

The train’s engineer saw the boy but could not stop in time. Gary Police say they don’t expect charges to be filed against the parents of Ryan Watson and are calling his death a tragic accident. But the boy’s family sees things a little differently. They say if there was some sort of fence around the tracks he might still be alive.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do without him. He was so close to me,” said Janet Watson, victim’s grandmother

Did VoIP cause a toddler’s death?

Posted May 2nd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.nationalpost.com

VoIP, or “Voice Over Internet Protocol”, is becoming a popular alternative to land based phones. But what’s buried in the fine print is something most VoIP customers don’t think about — the way 911 emergency calls are handled differently than the phone company.

Sylvia Luck called 911 on Tuesday night using a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone — which routes calls through the Internet — after her nephew, Elijah, appeared to be in medical distress, his left hand and leg quivering. An ambulance arrived more than 30 minutes later, and only after a neighbour called 911 from a land line.

Alison George, a spokeswoman for Comwave Telecom Inc., the VoIP provider for the Luck family, said its call centre heeded Ms. Luck’s plea and sent an ambulance to the address on file. Unfortunately, it was the family’s former address in suburban Toronto.

Internet-based phone services do not relay the caller’s location. When a land line is used, emergency services can see the person’s name, address and phone number.

Son shot entire family dead in South Carolina

Posted April 27th, 2008 by minortopics | via ap.google.com

An 18 year old teenager, shot and killed his entire family. The most heartbreaking was the report that his 14 year old brother tried to hide behind a clothes dryer, but was eventually found by the gun toting murderer and subsequently shot and killed.

What a jerk.

EASLEY, S.C. (AP) — An 18-year-old man gunned down his father, stepmother and two siblings at the home they shared in suburban South Carolina, authorities said Saturday.

Nathaniel Dickson, 18, was arrested 8:30 p.m. Saturday at a home in Belton about 20 miles from where the bodies of his family members were found, Anderson County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Susann Griffin said. He was charged with four counts of murder.

Less than 12 hours earlier, a 911 call led paramedics to find the father dead in the yard. Inside the home they found the other three victims, all shot to death.

Boy dies after fall from window

Posted April 25th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.mlive.com

We used to live in an apartment building where the landlord seemed even more paranoid about our child falling out a window than we were. And for good reason.

Police in Oakland County’s Waterford Township are investigating the death of a 4-year-old who fell from a second-story window of his home and landed on his head.

They said the boy fell in a subdivision near Cass Lake. That’s about 25 miles northwest of Detroit. He fell Wednesday evening and died early Thursday.

Authorities said the boy’s mother was home when he apparently pushed through a window screen.

Teens toxic suicide causes evacuation

Posted April 24th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.cnn.com

A 14-year-old in Japan killed herself by inhaling toxic fumes from mixing cleanser and laundry detergent. The fumes were so strong 90 people in neighboring apartments also became ill, with 10 needing hospitalization. It seems this girl’s death is part of an alarming trend:

The girl’s suicide Wednesday night was part of an expanding string of similar deaths that experts say have been encouraged by Internet suicide sites since last summer.

A 31-year-old man outside Tokyo killed himself inside a car early Thursday by mixing detergent and bath salts, police said. A local police spokesman refused to give further details, but Kyodo News agency reported the man put a sign reading “Stay Away” on the car window.

At a business hotel in Shiga prefecture in western Japan, a man in his 30s was found dead Thursday morning by employees who noticed a strange smell coming from his room, according to national broadcaster NHK. Shiga police said officials are investigating the incident as a case of suicide by hydrogen sulfide gas but could not elaborate.

Reports of another similar death emerged Thusday afternoon when the body of a 42-year-old woman in Nagoya, central Japan, was found in a bathtub. According to Kyodo, there was toilet cleaner and bath powder nearby, along with a sign outside that read, “Poisonous gas being emitted. Caution.”

Dad accidentally shoots son, thought he was a turkey

Posted April 20th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.foxnews.com

Wow, we can’t even imagine the grief and guilt this dad must be going through right now.

The Sibley County Sheriff says that a man who accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son while they were hunting apparently mistook the boy for a turkey.

Sheriff Bruce Ponath says that Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine and his son Hunter were hunting turkey about three miles west of Belle Plaine around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Klaseus shot his son in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Klaseus dialed 911 on his cell phone. Emergency responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene.
