4 year old accidently hangs self with hair band

Posted January 4th, 2008 by minortopics | via www.dailymail.co.uk

I just can’t imagine the agony these parents felt, when they found their daughter, dead in her bedroom…however, it is not the cartoon’s fault, but rather, a freak accident. I also find it curious that they are so confident that the cartoon, either “Dora the Explorer” or “Go Diego Go” gave her the idea. How do they know?? An accident is just that — an accident.

A couple who found their daughter hanging by her hairband in a freak accident believe she was trying to copy a stunt from her favourite cartoon series.

Phil Brown and Lorraine Ford, 26, tried desperately to save four-year-old Paige when they discovered her in her bedroom but were unable to revive her.

Paige had recently watched a scene in which a character was swinging around with what looked like a rope attached to his neck.

Two year old dead after wandering outside during the night

Posted January 3rd, 2008 by minortopics | via www.myfoxtwincities.com

You hear about these cases every once in a while, a toddler wanders outside during the night to brave harsh elements that usually leave them dead. It seems like such a preventable tragedy too, as in this case, a 2 year old, sleeping next to his mother as he was able to navigate through the house and find his way outside in minus 9 degree weather, ultimately freezing to death. Think of how scared and cold this baby must have been? I guess this can serve as a reminder that locked doors don’t just keep the bad guys out, they might just keep the good guys in.

NEW ULM, Minn — A two-year-old boy from New Ulm died after he wandered outside his home while his mother slept.

Lucas Boldt was found Wednesday morning in a snowbank about 10 to 20 feet from his home around the 1100 block of South Jefferson Street in New Ulm. His mother, Dara Lenz, found his frozen frozen body after she “woke up to a nightmare.” He was found about a block from his home around the 1100 block of South Jefferson Street.

A 12 year old, North Carolina child, was attacked by 5 feral dogs while she played basketball in her driveway. Her brother, the hero, was successful in fighting the dogs off but not before they took a few hefty chunks out of his little sister…she is now recovering.

Sanford — A 12-year-old Harnett County girl was recovering at home Wednesday after being attacked by a pack of dogs outside her home.

Melissa Rollins was playing basketball with her 13-year-old brother, Kevin, last Thursday outside their home on Rosser Pittman Road when five dogs – three adults and two pups – emerged from a nearby field. One of the larger dogs lunged at Melissa and began dragging her to a nearby woods line.

Million doses of meningitis vaccine recalled

Posted December 12th, 2007 by minortopics | via www.940news.com

Expect this to be put in the arsenal of the anti-vaccine crowd — the drug company Merck & Co. discovered a sterilization problem at one of their factories and are recalling over one million doses of a widely used childhood vaccine:

The company is not aware of any harm to children who received the vaccine, known as Hib, which prevents meningitis and pneumonia. It is a three-dose shot recommended for all children under five and is usually given to infants starting at two months old.

The recall involves 10 lots of Hib vaccine and two lots of a combination vaccine for both Hib and hepatitis B, a Merck spokeswoman said.

Aluminum bat ban proposed for state little league

Posted December 10th, 2007 by minortopics | via www.dailyherald.com

The Illinois legislature is proposing a bill that would ban the use of aluminum/metal bats by kids under 13 years old. Coaches, parents or teachers caught letting the kids use the bats would face a fine of up to $500. The reason is that the aluminum bats are supposedly more dangerous than wood, because the ball can be hit harder and faster. We don’t know enough about baseball to confirm or deny whether these concerns are valid, but it wouldn’t be the first time politicians have gone off half-cocked about an issue they know nothing about. One little league coach thinks this is one of those times:

Phil Rizzo, who runs Little League District 13 — covering 18 leagues in Bartlett, Hanover Park, Streamwood, South Elgin, Carpentersville and other suburbs — wants coaches, players and their families to speak out against a state ban on metal bats.

“If we didn’t believe it was safe, we would have gone to wooden bats a long time ago,” Rizzo said.

He’s been involved with youth baseball for nearly 20 years and says no complaints have come up about aluminum bats.

Wood bats reduce hitting averages and break more frequently than metal ones, forcing leagues and families to spend more money buying replacements, he said.

“This bill is a mistake based on bad information,” Rizzo said.

A child should never, ever be put in this position.

Pregnant woman tased

Posted November 29th, 2007 by minortopics | via www.whiotv.com

Does this mean maternity t-shirts with the now infamous catch phrase, “Don’t tase me embryo” will be available internet-wide, just in time for Christmas?

Surveillance video from the police department shows the woman try to leave with the child. The officer then grabs her coat in an effort to get her to stop. Etter said the officer was doing what he thought was in the best interest of the 1-year-old boy.

The video shows the woman struggle with the officer, who then takes the child from her and gives the boy to another officer. The first officer then forces the woman down on her stomach, and he then deploys a Taser on her neck.

Etter said the officer did not know the woman was pregnant.

Small children die of carbon monoxide poisoning

Posted November 27th, 2007 by minortopics | via www.kxly.com

It’s the silent killer.

I wonder if a carbon monoxide detector could have saved their lives?

ROYAL CITY, WA — Three children in Grant County - aged four months to eight years - died from exposure to gaseous fumes on Monday.

The kids were huddled around a small gas powered generator which was being used for heat during a power outage. It appears that carbon monoxide fumes released from the generator while it was running, contributing to their deaths.

Four-month old Alan Acosta Ramirez, two-year-old Yadina Acosta Ramirez and eight-year-old Jose Gilberto Acosta Ramirez were being looked after by an older sibling - 13-year-old Katya Rodriguez - and a niece - 21-year-old Jazmin Ramirez - on Monday.

Bad luck always comes in 3’s

Posted November 21st, 2007 by minortopics | via www.foxnews.com

Poor little baby…when accidents happen, it can create a domino effect. For this little 3 year old, it looks as if she’ll recover from her 3 accident trauma.

A 3-year-old girl in Mesa, Ariz., escaped with several serious wounds after a trifecta of unfortunate accidents, MyFoxPhoenix.com reported Tuesday.

The girl was playing in her backyard Monday and was somehow able to climb to the top of a cinderblock fence, when she fell off the wall and landed on a neighbor’s cactus plant, MyFoxPhoenix.com reported. She was subjected to further bad luck when the neighbor’s two dogs bit her and dragged her across the yard.
