[UPDATE: Barbara Walters came out today and denied that Elisabeth Hasselbeck was asked to leave "The View".
Walters said, "here is a particularly false story that keeps getting picked up about Elisabeth’s alleged departure saying that we don’t approve of her conservative views."
"The truth is we love Elisabeth. I like her personally. She’s just a wonderful person. But beyond that, we value and appreciate her point of view. It’s important to us because Elisabeth helps give this show perspective and balance. And believe me, she’s tougher than she looks. She’d have to be to sit here for a decade and take the kind of guff we give her. So we have no plans for Elisabeth to leave this show.”]
Elisabeth Hasselbeck, 35, is reportedly leaving her 9-year stint as a co-host of “The View” because her views are too radical.
A source confided in Us Magazine on Friday that shows producers made the decision to sever ties with Hasselbeck because her Republican views were too extreme for their audience. A focus group allegedly revealed to the show’s executives that Hasselbeck’s worldview “isn’t popular with TV audiences.”
An insider told Us, “The viewers they polled all said she was too extreme and right wing. People did not watch the show because of Elisabeth. So they told her yesterday her contract would not be renewed.”
Although Hot Air speculates that perhaps Hasselbeck was intending to leave anyway and that “The View” executives are simply trying to save face since Joy Behar has announced that she will be leaving after a 16 1/2 year run with the show. Behar is reportedly in current talks with CNN about getting her own show.
Could Hasselbeck, wife of former NFL QB Tim Hasselbeck, have Fox News in her sights? It would explain “The Views” interest in making Hasselbeck, who supports gay marriage and considered a fairly moderate Republican, as someone who is off the rails
