A young couple on their way to the hospital to deliver their baby were killed in a car accident while en route to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital in Alamance County, North Carolina Sunday night. North Carolina highway patrol believe that the couple’s car hydroplaned shortly before 10 pm and hit a tree, as the couple rushed to get to the hospital.

Casey and Megan Riggans, both 22, went off the side of the road, killing Megan and severely injuring Casey. It was reported that Mrs. Riggans wasn’t wearing a seat belt. Her husband Casey was driving.

Doctors were able to deliver the baby boy alive, but his condition is not yet known. According to Fox News, the baby was deprived of oxygen after Riggans passed.

The crash happened in a rural area during a severe thunderstorm.

The couple’s baby was due on September 27 so his early arrival was not planned.

Casey’s mother, Teresa Riggans said that the aftermath of the crash has not yet sunken in and that her son was not ready for all this. Casey suffered fractures to the face and back.
