Justin Paige Shoemake, 20, of Hudson, South Carolina, was arrested amid accusations that his three-month-old daughter suffered extensive abuse at his hands.
Police say that they received a call last Friday by a person that reported they had witnessed Shoemake assaulting the infant and alleged that he had choked her.
When police went to investigate they found the infant covered in bite marks. There were visible bite marks on the infant’s lip, nose, ears and other parts of her body.
The sheriff’s office said in a news release that the baby was brought to the hospital and doctors discovered she had “numerous serious injuries resulting from extensive physical abuse.”
“We will not tolerate the abuse of our children in this county. The investigators are working hard to build the strongest case possible so we can reach a successful prosecution,” Sheriff Alan Jones said.
The department of social services has custody of the baby girl.
Shoemake remains at the Caldwell County Detention Center under a $200,000 bond. He has been charged with felony child abuse, assault on a child under 12 and misdemeanor child abuse. Authorities say that the investigation is ongoing and more charges are pending.
