A 20-year-old mother in Wales has been sentenced to 15 months in jail for leaving her 15-month-old child alone for days so that she could attend parties during the Christmas holidays. The woman’s neighbors called the police after hearing the baby screaming.
The woman (who has not been named) would go back to her home every day to give the baby Cheerios and a microwave meal, before leaving again to return to a friend’s house. This continued for 5 days and nights before police were finally alerted. Officers who responded to the home said that house was filthy and without heat. The baby had been alone for more than 24 hours when they arrived, and was bleeding from a severe diaper rash. The mother said that during the time the baby was alone, she returned to the home only four times.
The woman’s lawyer, Geraint Jones, said: “The mum hopes to rebuild her relationship with her little girl very slowly when she leaves prison.” She pled guilty to the mother pleaded guilty to neglect, cruelty, ill-treatment, abandonment and wilful assault.
The baby is being cared for by relatives.
