A Chicago woman died Friday night following an abortion procedure at a Chicago Planned Parenthood at 18 S. Michigan Ave.. The Cook County medical examiner’s report cited bleeding and the pregnancy itself as contributing factors in her death.
Tonya Reaves, 24, is said to have died from massive hemorrhaging following a cervical dilation and evacuation (abortion). Reaves’ twin sister, Toni, said her sister was a mother to a little boy who just turned one. Reaves was also reportedly engaged to be married.
Reaves’ family is now asking how this could happen. While the death was ruled an accident, Reaves’ sister wants answers. Reaves’ twin said, “She was just fine one day and then the next day she was gone. We’re just trying to figure out what happened.”
According to the Chicago Tribune, the Guttmacher Institute, which is an abortion rights group, says less than 0.3 percent of abortions result in complications. They believe death related complications resulting from abortions to be quite rare.
Planned Parenthood has opted to refrain from speaking about the case. They would only say that safety is of their utmost concern and passed along condolences to the family. Planned Parenthood says that HIPAA laws prevent them from commenting further.
