A 12-year-old New Jersey boy is dead following the collapse of a hole he was digging with his brother along the Long Branch beach in New Jersey. Ezra Cornman was innocently digging a large tunnel in the sand with his friends and brother when it collapsed on him, suffocating him to death.

The incident happened late Tuesday afternoon. Life guards dug the boy out but witnesses say he was unconscious and had blood coming from his nose.

Adding to the tragedy, the fire truck responding to the incident struck a man holding his infant son en route to the scene. The father reportedly suffered at least several broken ribs and the infant suffered less severe injuries.

According to CBS News, there are at least one to two beach hole or tunnel deaths per year in the United States.

The tunnel was reportedly three-feet deep and the sand was so heavy, medics believed it crushed Cornman’s chest, leaving him unable to breathe.
