Sierra Newbold, a 6-year-old West Jordan, Utah girl who went missing Tuesday morning was found dead that same day in a canal near her home. She had been sexually assaulted.

Chief of Police Doug Diamond said, ”our highest priority now is to identify, arrest, and successfully prosecute the person or persons responsible for this crime. I share in the concern of our residents for the ongoing safety and security of our children.”

The girl’s grandfather, Reed Newbold, said the girl’s mother discovered her daughter missing when she went into the girl’s bedroom Tuesday morning. He says “it’s a complete mystery” how she went missing. There were no signs of a break in at the home, located near 2400 West and 7100 South. The girl’s parents, Kathy and Brad Newbold, are said to be devastated and cooperating with police.

The 6-year-old’s body was found in a canal only one block from her home, 30 minutes after her mother called the police at 7:27am to report her disappearance.
