A 2-year-old toddler on Chicago’s south side was found by a neighbor early Wednesday morning, lying on a sidewalk after he apparently fell from a second story window. The toddler’s family wasn’t home at the time of the incident. The boy’s mother, Vernisha Carter, 22, was charged with several misdemeanors after police discovered she had left the youngster home alone.
Neighbor Denise Barnes told CBS Local News she was surprised that anybody lived in the building, located across the street from her, because she was under the impression that the building was vacant. She explained that while she heard a lot of loud music and screaming coming from the home, she also witnessed a man telling them they shouldn’t be in there.
The toddler avoided serious injury because he landed on some grass, but bounced onto the sidewalk. He is now listed in stable condition the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital.
