A 1-year-old child and his father were shot by a teen riding by on his bicycle in LA on Monday night. Mauro Cortez, 24, was holding his son Angel on the 10500 block of Hickory Street when a boy rode by on a bike and started firing at them.
The baby died at the hospital after a single gunshot to the torso. His father was shot once in the shoulder and injured.
Captain Phil Tingirides of the LAPD said, “I’m so angry that this kind of thing could happen, because this is the scenario that we talk about constantly in community meetings and that is the innocent kids, in this case a baby, who get caught in the middle.”
Police are asking for the public’s help finding the shooter, who is described as being between the ages of 15 and 17. They believe the shooting was gang-related. Neighbors told a reporter from CBS2 Los Angeles that while they did not think the father was involved in a gang, he did take some purple tee shirts that were being given out by a local gang, possibly without understanding that accepting the shirts would be a sign of gang affiliation.
